acrylic, steel, polyester resin, and aluminum leaf on wood

-when i asked artist, russell biles, if he had thought about making a sculpture based on superman he responded by asking me why i shouldn't do it myself. so i thought ..... ok!

i grew up being introduced to the late christopher reeve's superman first and so that is the superman persona that i chose to base this painting on. the face of jesus inside the superman's crest is based on a portrait of him i remember having a porcelain reproduction of growing up and in my opinon is a cliche or stereotype (i call him the 'white boy jesus';). i chose to allow my version appear a little more weathered and aged than the original. as i worked on this piece, and definately after i finished it, i felt my own response more personal than i anticipated. i will resist the temptation to explain what i think my painting represents since there are too many things this causes me to think on. so, for now, i will just let each veiwer have an unled response. please feel free to comment and share your thoughts below.

click here if you would like to see a detail of this painting. i also have a couple of images of this painting before it was finished in my 'work in progress' journal. "keeping the faith" is the second painting in which i have referenced superman. the first painting is a self-portrait called "super-double burger boy".

if you have a minute, take a look at this video of christopher reeve clips with sound clips from the original cartoons. i think it is pretty cool!

i think this and all your work is amazing. The mixture of media is brilliant. The yellow parts of the suns rays, are they carved out from the wood?
:iconmicahsherrill:
thank you very much. the whole painting is on a piece of plywood. so all the rays were carved. some were guilded and some were painted. look in the description of the painting and you will find a link to the piece in progress.

Though I don't really agree with the connection between Superman and Jesus, it is a very interesting and thoughtful piece.
:iconmicahsherrill:
thanks for the feedback. the connection is personal for me. i don't expect everyone to understand or agree. your graphic work is very striking, by the way.
